Ancient Karkotakas of Kashmir – Pratapaditya / Vinayaditya Gold Dinara

Base Gold | Ancient Kashmir | Rare Historical Coin

An exceptionally interesting ancient gold-content dinara associated with the Karkota rulers of Kashmir, featuring the characteristic Kushan-inspired design tradition of a standing king and a seated goddess.

This remarkable coin belongs to the post-Kushan / post-Gupta numismatic tradition of Kashmir, when local rulers continued and adapted earlier Kushan and Kidarite monetary designs. The type is particularly important for collectors of early medieval Indian coinage because of its distinctive iconography and continued use of ancient monetary conventions.

Obverse

The obverse features a seated goddess, traditionally identified with Lakshmi / Ardoksho, seated frontally on a throne.

The goddess represents prosperity, abundance and divine fortune. The composition reflects the strong influence of earlier Kushan and Kidarite coin designs that continued to appear in modified form on later northern Indian issues.

Reverse

The reverse depicts the ruler standing in a Kushan-style pose, associated with the traditional sacrificial/ritual imagery found on this family of coins.

The surviving legends and highly stylised design connect the issue with the Pratapaditya / Vinayaditya series, making it a fascinating example of the continuation of Kushan-influenced coinage traditions in Kashmir.

Historical Significance

The Karkota rulers played an important role in the history of Kashmir and northern India. Their coinage demonstrates the remarkable longevity of earlier monetary traditions, with Kushan and Kidarite-inspired imagery continuing to influence later issues.

The use of a seated goddess on one side and a standing ruler on the other creates a fascinating visual link between the coinage of the Kushans, Kidarites and later Kashmir. The increasingly stylised execution of the designs is itself an important characteristic of this numismatic tradition.
