Ancient Haryana – Yaudheya Republic

Karttikeya & Devasena Copper Unit | 11.52 g | c. 3rd–4th Century CE

A remarkable ancient copper coin of the Yaudheya Republic, associated with the Haryana region of northern India, featuring Karttikeya (Skanda) on the obverse and his consort Devasena on the reverse.

Dating to approximately the 3rd–4th century CE, this substantial 11.52-gram copper unit is around 1,700–1,800 years old and represents an important piece of Haryana’s ancient political, religious and numismatic heritage.

Obverse

Karttikeya (Skanda) is depicted standing facing, holding a spear in his right hand. A small peacock, his traditional vehicle, appears near his feet.

The surrounding Brahmi legend reads:

“Yaudheya Ganasya Jaya”

meaning “Victory to the Yaudheya people.”

The legend is especially significant because it identifies the collective Yaudheya Gana rather than an individual ruler.

Reverse

The reverse depicts Goddess Devasena, consort of Karttikeya, standing facing left within a dotted border.

She is shown with a raised hand and is accompanied by distinctive religious symbols:

  • Kalasha – sacred vessel symbolising auspiciousness, abundance and prosperity.
  • Triratna / Nandipada – an important ancient religious symbol.

The pairing of Karttikeya and Devasena makes this an especially attractive example of ancient Indian religious coinage.

Historical Significance

The Yaudheyas were an ancient warrior republic whose territories were strongly associated with present-day Haryana and adjoining regions of northern India.

Their name is derived from the ancient concept of the yodha, meaning warrior, and their coinage reflects their strong martial identity. Rather than depicting a hereditary monarch, Yaudheya coins prominently celebrate the gana, or collective republican community.

The inscription “Yaudheya Ganasya Jaya” — “Victory to the Yaudheya people” is therefore of exceptional historical importance. It provides direct evidence of a political system in which the identity of the community itself was represented on its coinage.

Karttikeya and the Yaudheyas

The Yaudheyas were particularly devoted to Karttikeya (Skanda), the Hindu deity associated with warfare, military power and victory.

His appearance on Yaudheya coinage is one of the most distinctive features of the series and reflects the community’s martial character.

The depiction of Devasena, Karttikeya’s consort, on the reverse adds further religious significance and creates an unusually complete representation of the Skanda tradition.
