Historical Background
The Chahamana dynasty of Ajmer was one of the prominent Rajput ruling houses of medieval northern India. Ajmer developed into an important centre under the Chahamanas, whose territories extended across parts of present-day Rajasthan and neighbouring regions.
Ajaya Deva is traditionally regarded as an important ruler of the early 12th-century Chahamana line. His coinage provides tangible evidence of the political and cultural environment of medieval Rajasthan.
The depiction of Goddess Lakshmi on the coin is especially noteworthy. Religious imagery was an important component of medieval Indian coinage, while the inclusion of the ruler's name in Nagari script provides an important connection between the physical coin and its issuing authority.
