Ancient India – Magadha Silver Karshapana

Mauryan Punch-Marked Coin | Gupta-Hardaker Series IVd 451

A remarkable ancient Indian silver Karshapana, belonging to the early Magadha punch-marked coinage tradition and associated with the monetary system that developed in the powerful kingdom of Magadha and continued into the Mauryan period.

Dating to approximately the 6th century BCE, this coin represents one of the earliest and most important forms of organised silver currency in the Indian subcontinent.

Coin Type

This is a Silver Punch-Marked Karshapana, produced using the distinctive ancient Indian technique of applying individual symbols to a silver flan with separate punches.

Unlike later die-struck coins, each symbol was impressed individually, resulting in an arrangement of multiple punches that can vary considerably from specimen to specimen.

The coin belongs to the Gupta-Hardaker Series IVd, reference 451.

Design

The surface displays multiple punch-marked symbols, characteristic of the Magadha/Mauryan silver Karshapana series.

These symbols were not produced as a single complete design. Instead, individual punches were applied to the silver piece at different stages, creating the distinctive overlapping and irregular arrangement seen on ancient punch-marked coinage.

Historical Significance

Magadha was one of the most powerful Mahajanapadas of ancient India and played a decisive role in the political development of the subcontinent.

The emergence and widespread circulation of silver punch-marked coins represents a major milestone in Indian monetary history. These early coins were used extensively for trade, taxation and commercial transactions and continued to circulate across successive political periods.

The Magadhan monetary tradition eventually became closely associated with the Mauryan Empire, whose expansion under rulers such as Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka created one of the largest political and economic systems of ancient India.

Punch-marked coins are therefore particularly important because they belong to a period when India’s earliest large-scale monetary systems were developing.

Why Punch-Marked Coins Are Special

The term “punch-marked” refers to the manufacturing process rather than a single design. Individual symbols were struck onto the silver flan using separate punches.

This technique gives every surviving specimen its own distinctive arrangement of symbols, making these coins fascinating objects for both historical and numismatic study.
