This rupee belongs to the late frozen-date issues struck at Surat by the East India Company in the name of Shah Alam II, decades after his death.
The frozen RY 46 was maintained for uniformity in trade, even though actual regnal years had long passed.
The privy mark #8, a key diagnostic feature, identifies the exact striking series within the Surat Presidency issues.
The Western date 1825 in cartouche makes this type especially desirable for collectors of dated Mughal–EIC transitional issues.
These coins circulated widely in Gujarat and western India, being one of the most trusted silver rupees in commerce.
