? Historical Note

Sher Shah Suri reformed the Indian monetary system, introducing the silver “Rupiya” standard (~11.5 g, broad flan), which became the foundation of India’s currency for centuries.

His rupees often bear innovative layouts of inscriptions and calligraphy, along with mint marks that varied between issues.

The Circular Areas Type with broad flan, as seen here, is especially prized for its artistry and clear inscriptions.

Dated AH 949 (1542 CE), this coin belongs to the height of Sher Shah’s reign, when his administrative and currency reforms reshaped North Indian trade and governance.
